October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 10, 2020 by lollysbrightside1 Leave a Comment

It’s that time of the year.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

An annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.

Pink Ribbon Campaign

Early detection is the key

In February of 2010 I was scheduled to have my second mammogram. I had my first one the previous year around my birthday. This way I would remember to go at the same time each year. News had come out with new regulations for when you should get a mammogram and they were saying if you don’t have any family history or any noticeable changes (monthly self examinations are very important too) you could wait until you are 50. Well I thought about it since I had no family history or noticeable changes but decided to keep my appointment. I’m sure glad I did.

Hope

Let’s talk about mammograms…. Most women are afraid to get one done. They have heard stories that it’s painful….Well I can tell you from experience it is not….it may be a little uncomfortable but once it’s done that is it.

Mammogram

So back to early 2010….I received a call from the hospital (where I had the mammogram done) she said I needed to come back in so they could take a few more images and do an ultrasound. Well a few weeks latter we met with the doctor and he delivered the news to me that I had breast cancer.

Time to schedule your mammogram

Don’t forget!

Mammogram Guidelines

Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year. Women 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or can continue yearly screening. Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer.

“We are making progress ….breast cancer death rates have declined 40% from 1989 to 2016 among women. The progress is attributed to improvements in early detection.” American Cancer Society

If you have not already scheduled your mammogram appointment….do so today.

Simple Fall Decor Using Flameless Candles

Fall favorites using flameless candles

Here are some of my favorite fall decorations. I put these pumpkins out every fall. This year to make if feel more warm and cozy I found these flameless candles. https:/amzn.to/2SBTW2g They are battery operated and most have a remote control and timer you can set to come on/off at a certain time each day. Just turn them on and set. https://amzn.to/3jJnmYy When I come home from work the candle light is very warm and inviting. Now to the kitchen area where I put real pumpkins out.

Pumpkin patch pumpkins

These beautiful pumpkins are from a local dairy farm, They have a little store where they sell their raw milk, cheese and other items from neighboring farms. On Saturday’s they host a farmers market that local vendors set up and sell their homegrown produce and handmade items.

Every year they bring in hundreds of pumpkins. The pumpkin patch at The Jersey Barnyard is favorite for all to go for Fall pictures, a farm tour, hay rides, bottle feeding calves and picking out the best pumpkins. This year I picked out these beauties. I just love the light green and pale pink colors and how they look nestled together. I added a larger single flameless candle to tie in the cozy feel I was going for. https://amzn.to311MCEm

Inviting warm glow

I decided to put these candles on the coffee table with a rustic wood pumpkin. They add a warm glow to the space. The flickering flames are very realistic. https://amzn.to/3nplqGK They are safe and non-toxic and great to use around children and pets. I will use these candles mixed in with my other holiday decorations too.

Happy Fall Y’all

Hi, I’m Sheri aka Lolly (more about that in a bit). I was diagnosed with breast cancer in March of 2010. Fast forward 10 years… I live in a small town where I grew up in Central Texas with my husband of 20 years and our 15 year old Shi Tzu Lulu. We have a daughter (my step-daughter) CJ and a son-in-law Jake. We were blessed with our first grandchild Kamyrn in November 2019. That’s where the Lolly part comes in. I work full time at a jewelry store on the square in our small town. I love to garden, cook and do DIY projects at home. I’d like to invite you to come along as I navigate everyday life in between cancer treatments and working. I’ll share my ideas for easy weeknight meals , meal prepping, organic gardening and finding peace.

Thanks for stopping by. Sheri
